Sea Warriors ranked No. 1 in preseason poll

The Hawaii Pacific University men's tennis team was ranked No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll. The Sea Warriors are the top-ranked team of 165 Division II schools. Last season, HPU concluded the year as national runners-up.

The Lady Sea Warriors were also ranked in the preseason poll, at No. 14. HPU captured the NCAA West Region Championship and appeared in the national championships.

Wie and Toyama receive Pro-Junior golf invite

Punahou freshman Michelle Wie and University's Travis Toyama have been invited to play in the First Hawaiian Bank Pro-Junior Golf Challenge on Jan. 13. In the Challenge format, a Tour pro and a junior golf player are paired by a computer draw in the six-hole contest. PGA pros Jeff Sluman and Jerry Kelly will be participating in the event. Four other Tour pros will be named later.

Four more junior golfers will come from this weekend's Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions at Wailea, Maui. The State Junior Golf Association will receive $12,000 of the $25,000 purse. The winning pro will get $5,000 with the other Tour pros receiving $1,600 each.
