Sex offender indicted for jumping his bail

An Ewa Beach man who fled the state just before he was to be sentenced earlier this year for sex assault was indicted yesterday for first-degree bail jumping.

Jovie Adora, 24, was arrested on Guam and returned to Hawaii.

He is serving a 20-year sentence for sexually assaulting four girls.

Bail jumping is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Prosecutors are expected to ask that Adora be ordered to serve the maximum term consecutively to the term he is already serving.

Deputy Prosecutor Scott Bell said Adora was free on bail and failed to appear for sentencing.

Adora had closed his bank account and boarded a flight to the Philippines.

Adora was captured only after a concerted effort by law enforcement, Bell said.

Authorities intercepted Adora when his flight made a brief stop on Guam.

At sentencing in October, Adora argued that he pleaded guilty to the charges and later fled because unnamed police officers had twice threatened to harm him and his family.

The court rejected his explanation, saying it lacked credibility and was unsubstantiated.

Conference will focus on health and culture

Making presentations tomorrow will be Joseph Gallegos, chairman, National Association of Community Health Centers, and Dr. Lupo Carlotta, commissioner of the White House Commission on Asian and Pacific Islanders.

The Native Hawaiian Health Centers will present an award Friday to Maj. Gen. Joseph G. Webb Jr. of Tripler Army Medical Center for supporting Hawaii Federal Health Care Partnership's Behavioral Health and Electronic Medical Records projects.
