[ TURNING POINT ]

UH's offense can only watch game slip away

As it did in last season's game on the blue, blue turf of home, Boise State used a time-consuming drive to ice its 45-28 victory against Hawaii last night at Aloha Stadium.

UH's defense started the third quarter in spectacular fashion, shackling the Broncos with three consecutive three-and-outs in which the UH defenders took turns making big plays.

But Boise State would have no more of that after taking over at its own 9 with 6:23 left in the third quarter.

Ryan Dinwiddie completed three passes in a row for first downs, including two to wide receiver Tony McPherson.

The 12-play drive ended with Donny Heck doing his best Brock Forsey impersonation, slamming in from 8 yards out. The BSU lead became 31-21, and UH would never get within one score of the Broncos again.

Hawaii looks forward to meeting Houston

Hawaii plays in a bowl game for the second year in a row for the first time in school history. The Warriors face Houston of Conference USA (7-5, 4-4 C-USA) on Dec. 25 at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors and Cougars have never met in football. This will be Houston's first bowl game since 1996, and the Cougars played in the 1988 Aloha Bowl, falling 24-22 to Washington State.

While most Hawaii fans don't have a connection to Houston, several Warriors coaches and players do.

Special teams coach Tyson Helton played quarterback for the Cougars, and his father, Kim Helton, was head coach there.

Head coach June Jones was wide receivers coach of the USFL Houston Gamblers in 1984 and quarterbacks coach of the NFL Houston Oilers in 1987 and 1988.

Defensive line coach Vantz Singletary is from Houston, as is former Warriors linebacker and current graduate assistant Rinda Brooks.
