1970: Adman to make
a special delivery
in London
AN honor of enormous proportions has fallen to Lennen & Newell prexy Jack Seigle. He's been asked to fly to London to deliver an in-depth presentation on the campaign of Gov. John Burns to the International Association of Political Consultants' annual convention. He'll take along a copy of the Governor's campaign film, "Catch a Wave," as well as slides and TV copy his firm prepared for the successful campaign. Seigle's is one of only six presentations WORLDWIDE which the group has asked to see, others coming from France, Italy, England and the Philippines. He'll leave tomorrow, still awed by the honor and a little frightened about addressing party reps, film and agency people from all over the free world. (Dec. 10, 1970) ...
ALTHOUGH Milton Cades was on the dinner committee for the third annual Christmas dinner of the Honolulu Wine and Food Society, he had to miss the elegant affair because he and his wife were hospitalized with broken bones suffered in a golf cart accident. But Ed Hastings, a fellow committee member, aided by maitre'd Tony Manzo and chef Peter Kleiser, saw to it that the Cades' were served the entire meal in the Queen's Hospital room they share - right down to a bottle of Chateau Latour, 1960. IN the December issue of Honolulu magazine there's a story by E. Gordon Dickie about Aspen and the hoards of Honolulans who go there to ski each winter. Included is a picture taken at Dickie's Aspen digs of Stan and Hildegard Hattie, arms about each other, smiling radiantly. Dr. Dickie had best not look for their return this winter -- the two are going though divorce proceedings. (Dec. 9, 1976) ...
THE National Notary Association magazine announced in its current issue that the group's first national conference will be held May 3, 1979 at the Ala Moana Hotel and he keynote speaker will be Attorney General Ron Amemiya. I hope their programs aren't printed yet - Amemiya resigned last week. (Dec. 10, 1978) ...
YOU think you have a lot of friends dropping by during the holiday season? Check out the household of Ralph Rodgers, G.M. of the Polynesian Cultural Center Friday. He's invited all the center's 1,000 plus employees to drop by his Laie home and receive a Christmas gift from him and his wife. In addition, all are invited to tour the newly remodeled residence. Can't you just picture all the shoes and zoris outside the front door? (Dec. 14, 1983) ...
THE program for the University of Hawaii theater department's 50th season shows five pictures from productions during five decades. The first showed now City Councilwoman Patsy Mink in a production of "The Swan" in 1947-48 and the 1959-60 offering pictures Yours Truly as Estragon in "Waiting for Godot." Yes, it does make one feel his age. (Dec. 14, 1984) ...
ON Saturday, Bank of America will debut Honolulu's first supermarket bank at Market City Foodland. Now customers can bank after work seven days a week and do their shopping on the same trip. Though this is the first bank in supermarket, "in store" banking does have a precedent in Hawaii. Years ago, Liberty Bank had a branch bank in a store. Ironically, the Market City Foodland was originally financed through Liberty Bank and, double irony, Liberty is currently in the process of merging with Bank of America. (Dec. 8, 1993) ...
I TOOK my first stroll through the Aloha Tower Marketplace the other day and was surprised at a number of things. One, it's bigger than I envisioned with many more kiosk and shops. The restaurants and bars seemed to be doing a brisk business for a weekday afternoon. I knew barely a soul in any of the places, which would indicate many are using the Marketplace's trolley transportation from Waikiki. I was also surprised to find you can buy a "100 percent Cuban Made Cigar" there. In a country that sill has an embargo on Cuban cigars? That's right -- the Don Pablo Smoke Shop employs a Cuban fellow who rolls cigars in its shop as you watch. (Dec. 7, 1994) ...
TRUE story: Al Souza walked into Murphy's at the end of the first quarter of the game between the L.A. Raiders and San Diego and asked, "What's the score?" Told 7 - 7, he responded, "Who's leading?" (Dec. 8, 1994) ...
