The anniversary of the 1948 U.N. action to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Honolulu Baha'i Community Center, 2165 10th Ave.

Renee Wesly, a Honolulu elementary school teacher and Baha'i member, will discuss the religion's perspective on the declaration, which was drafted as a universal standard for nations to follow. The event is free. Refreshments will be served.

Advent season a time for spiritual reflection

The season of Advent, a time of spiritual reflection in preparation for the celebration of Christ's birth, is being observed in island churches in services open to the public.

>> Nuuanu Congregational Church members will reflect on Joseph as he prepared for the birth of Mary's child on the first Christmas. The Rev. Phyllis Meighen will lead the noontime devotional service on Wednesday and Dec. 17 at the church, 2651 Pali Highway. Brown-bag lunch is optional.

>> Harris United Methodist Church members lead Wednesday noon meditations at 20 S. Vineyard Blvd. The congregation produced a book of "Advent Daily Devotionals" of their own writings and drawings.

>> The "Journey Through Advent" at St. John Lutheran Church, 1004 Kailua Road, will continue at 6 p.m. Wednesdays with a supper and service.
