Balanced attack leads Hilo past Hawaii Pacific
Joe Travis scored 16 points to lead six Hawaii-Hilo players in double figures as the Vulcans beat Hawaii Pacific 85-76 last night in a Division II basketball game at Blaisdell Arena.
UHH (5-2) trailed 41-40 at the half but came back for the win.
Justin Griffin and Ryan Abrahams contributed 15 points apiece for the Vulcans and Terrance Troupe added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Aaron Abrams led the Sea Warriors (0-6) with 27 points, while Marvin Noble scored 21. Audrius Peciukas had seven points and 10 rebounds.
Special Olympics are held this weekend
The opening ceremonies for the 2003 Special Olympics Hawaii Holiday Classic begin at 7:15 tonight at Hickam Air Force Base Hangar No. 7. The Parade of Athletes and torch-lighting ceremony officially usher in a weekend of events.
Basketball, bowling and bocce will be held today through Sunday, also at Hickam. Speed skating was held yesterday. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
The victory dance will be held tomorrow night at the Marine Corps Base at Kaneohe Bay.
Junior Tennis Championships start tomorrow
The 2003 Aloha Airlines Junior Tennis Championships are set for tomorrow and Sunday at Central Oahu Regional Park, featuring nearly 200 players in novice, intermediate and grand prix divisions.
It is an invitational tournament with a field made of qualifiers from a series of statewide tournaments. Players are boys and girls ages 10-18.
