Kahumoku named WAC Player of the Week

There aren't many things Hawaii senior Lily Kahumoku hasn't done in her Rainbow Wahine career. But yesterday was the first time Kahumoku earned awards on consecutive days.

After being named an academic All-American on Sunday, Kahumoku picked up her second Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor of the season. It was the fifth time overall and perhaps the easiest selection for the WAC since no other schools submitted nominations.

Kahumoku posted double-doubles in leading Hawaii to two victories in the UNLV Thanksgiving tournament.

Brakling earns second-team All-America honor

Hawaii Pacific outside hitter Flavia Brakling was named a second-team AVCA volleyball All-American yesterday.

The sophomore helped the Sea Warriors reach the regional final of the NCAA Division II championship. The 6-foot-3 outside hitter had eight matches with at least 20 kills and finished the season with 400 kills. Brakling, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, led HPU in kills (4.17) and digs (2.43) per game and helped the Sea Warriors to a 17-8 record.

It is the sixth straight year that an HPU player has earned All-America recognition.

Sea Warriors ink 4 softball recruits

Brandi Peiler, Nicole Kalakau, Lia Pedrina, and Dayna Berry will don Hawaii Pacific softball uniforms in the 2004-05 season.

Peiler, the 2003 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year, is a pitcher/outfielder who was named to the Star-Bulletin's all-state second team. Kalakau, a Kamehameha teammate of Peiler's, was also a second-team Star-Bulletin all-state selection.

Pedrina was an all-state performer this year for Castle as a pitcher/outfielder. Berry, a 6-foot southpaw from Mission Viejo, Calif., was also an all-league selection.

Baseball: The HPU baseball team also announced the signing of a local standout yesterday. Infielder Danny Lee of Saint Louis School has committed to the Sea Warrior baseball team and will join the squad for the 2004-05 season.
