Jennifer Alba: Plays a rejected dancer who opens a studio for youths in "Honey."

"Honey": Star Jessica Alba (formerly TV's "Dark Angel") plays a girl from the Bronx who wants to be a dancer, but gets chewed up and spit out by the video music industry before deciding to open a dance studio for inner-city youths. Mekhi Phifer costars as Honey's hometown sugar, and rapper-turned-thespian Lil' Romeo plays a neighborhood waif with big dreams. Music-video director Billie Woodruff has called in plenty of high-caliber cameos to appear in his film debut, including Missy Elliott, Ginuwine and Tweet. (PG-13)

"The Last Samurai": The last time Tom Cruise appeared in a historical epic was in 1992's immigrant ode "Far and Away." Here, Cruise is a tortured U.S. Civil War veteran who is invited by Japan's emperor to modernize his army. But once there, he becomes increasingly sympathetic to his samurai opposition, whose ancient code the emperor wants to eradicate. With conflict looming, he's forced to choose a side. Director Edward Zwick spent almost a decade developing this movie, a fact-based fiction inspired by the life of Saigo Takamori, who was known as "the last samurai." (R)
