Hug sidelines
Bomb’s Ogata

TALK ABOUT partying so hard it hurts -- local comedian and 102.7 Da Bomb morning show co-host Paul Ogata had to sit out a couple of scheduled gigs over the weekend, afraid that he might have suffered broken ribs at the radio station's third birthday party on Wednesday night.

No, he didn't get jumped for chucking a beer bottle into the crowd or "escorted" out of the club for talking smack to one of the bouncers. It was his co-worker, afternoon jock Sam the Man, who injured Ogata after a congratulatory bear hug.

Luckily, a visit to the hospital determined that it wasn't broken ribs. As Ogata writes on his Web site, his doctor said "it's only the cartilage ... ONLY? Halle-freaking-lujah. So the horrible pain I feel when I'm breathing could be worse. Yay. At least they gave me these pills that would make Rush Limbaugh proud." ...

ONE HIGHLIGHT from my six-day weekend (WARNING: I'm a trained professional. Don't try this without supervision) had to be the first installment of "Star Bar" at Longhi's in Ala Moana Center. It was another Doorman Productions/Pussycat Projects/Komo Low Entertainment/Double-o-Spot collaboration, so I knew the turnout would be pretty good for this one.

And of course, I wasn't disappointed. All the beautiful people and wannabe-beautiful people were getting their party on when I walked in, and once I spotted The Shortest Nightlife Writer in Honolulu sneaking around, it was confirmed: "Star Bar" was the place for Honolulu's cool crowd on the night before Thanksgiving. But what's cooler than cool? Ice cold ...

MOVING ON to this week, check out Don Ho's Island Grill tomorrow for the finals of their "Talent Search and Karaoke Contest 2003."

Hosted by Al Waterson, the competition started back in February, with contestants battling it out for a shot at a recording contract with the Mountain Apple Co. and an invite to perform in Las Vegas at a holiday showcase with Don Ho himself. Ten semifinalists are scheduled to participate tomorrow night; call 528-0807 for ticket prices and more information ...

AND AFTER a successful first try back in September, Pipeline Cafe presents "Irie 2" this Thursday night with local acts Marty Dread, Stir Crazy and Freesound. KTUH's DJ Big Bar will also be on hand. Call 479-6004 ...
