Stanford started the day with a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches -- by a combined score of 24-3.

Centeio wins Rip Curl Cup trials

Hawaii's Joel Centeio won yesterday's Rip Curl Cup trials at Sunset Beach in 10- to 12-foot surf to advance into the main event.

In the 30-minute decider, Centeio held off Tahiti's Manoa Drollet and Hawaii's Sean Moody and Love Hodel to win. The 20-year-old former world amateur champion moved into his first World Championship Tournament and will face defending Rip Curl Cup champion Joel Parkinson and Australian Phil MacDonald.

Moody and Hodel also advanced into the main event, along with wild cards Pancho Sullivan and Jamie O'Brien of Hawaiian Rip Curl.

Bethany Hamilton, the 13-year-old Kauai surfer who lost her left arm in a shark attack three weeks ago, presented the trophy to Centeio.
