Didn’t you get that memo?
DAYDREAMING in a turkey-induced stupor:
>> I like the new Rainbow Wahine basketball uniforms, the ones that read WAHINE across the front. But I wonder if the team has received the standard UH memo (as I have, more than once) that reminds you not to refer to Hawaii women's teams as "Wahine." Acceptable official names, we are told, are Rainbow Wahine, Rainbows, Hawaii or UH.
Yes, I would think they'd get a memo.
>> Not a good show by the Rainbows in the Maui Classic final. But the UH win over Chaminade was an enormous non-loss.
>> "Hawaii Warriors" in basketball? Et tu, ESPN? Et tu?
That's another memo.
>> Look at tomorrow's big game and ask yourself again: Does UH really want to get into another conference? Alabama and Hawaii offer a glaring contrast in the Margin for Error department. Have an off year in the Southeastern Conference and end up 4-8. Go room temperature-to-cold through much of the year with a Western Athletic Conference schedule to fall back on, and you're still 7-4, with a postseason bowl bid in the gift bag.
There's only one Vanderbilt in the SEC.
>> Having UH in the game isn't enough; it's how Hawaii plays in these next two games that will determine the attendance in this year's Hawaii Bowl.
>> Hawaii corner Abraham Elimimian has quietly had a great year. It will be a crime if he's not first-team All-WAC.
>> You have to believe June Jones has at least a trick or two up his sleeve for this Alabama game.
I can't wait to see What, When and Who. This is going to be fun.
>> (And Coach will recall that I backed him up last season on that fake punt deep inside his own territory on a fourth-and-15 ...)
>> Is there a more compelling game tonight than Damien vs. Waimea on Kauai? (Of course, Baldwin vs. Saint Louis at the stadium sounds pretty good, too.)
>> Lahainaluna's win in the opening round of the Division II playoffs despite ending the regular season with a 1-7-1 record tells us three things: 1) Home-island advantage is nice to get (ask Kailua). 2) Maui is a pretty good football league. That's Division I competition. 3) My old alma mater is a borderline Division I team itself -- although you might have a tough time convincing the Lunas of that when they have to play giant schools Maui High and Baldwin every year.
>> Dear Sports Columnist: "In any future article will you mention (for the UH coaches' sake) Boise State's willingness to do trickery by using a fake punt or onside kickoff."
COMMENT: Well, here it is. But I'm sure the UH coaches have noticed that, too. Don't worry, they're not turning to this column for last-minute tips.
>> Speaking of feedback, I'm told that a Sidelines reader called to say we should let Michelle Wie coach the UH team in the bowl game and let June Jones play in the Sony Open.
"I have more ideas," the guy reportedly said.
Of course he does.
Where is that number? I'm calling this guy back.
