Sleepy? Blame it on
those turkey acids
IF you're like most of us, you're still feeling sleepy after downing all that Thanksgiving turkey. If you're wondering why turkey should make you feel like nodding off, blame it on L-typtophan, an amino acid that nearly always works ... This may wake you up: Back in about 1960, there was a feature on bachelors of Waikiki and among those in the group were such blades as insurance man Bill Gleason and soccer maven (even back then) Jack Sullivan. Well, "Uncle Jack" got married soon after and has celebrated his 41st anniversary. As for Gleason, he has shown up with many a lady at functions he had to attend, and not one of them ever got a ring. Well folks, believe it or not, Gleason, now 71, has finally given up on bachelorhood. The lucky lady to become Mrs. Gleason is his girlfriend of late, Sherry Abreu ...
SPEAKING OF Sullivan, his son Kevin, who always seemed to get recruited into being a leprechaun in the St. Patrick's Day parade, has come out with a new book, just in time for Christmas. It's called "Auntie Lulu's Zoo-Old Macdonald Hawaiian Style." Young Sullivan's earlier books include "How to Recycle a Dead Gecko," "The Return of the Dead Gecko" and his biggest seller, "The Best Hawaiian Style Mother Goose Ever" with illustrations by Deb Aoki ... University of Hawaii alum Kimo Gerard, house manager of Carnegie Hall in N.Y. sends word that UH music prof Karen Kennedy will conduct choral works by Mozart at Canegie's Isaac Stern Auditorium Sunday. The Honolulu Symphony Chorus will be part of the program as well ...
Thanks a lot

For starters, they got to watch grandson Whitney Haugen, marching and playing drums with the Roosevelt High School Band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. Just days earlier, they celebrated Carmen's birthday. Even with a teenage grandson, she still claims to be "39 and some months." They had a birthday dinner at the Mandarin on Cooke Street, which they have proclaimed Hawaii's best Chinese restaurant, and I agree ... They concluded the celebration at Neptune's Garden in the Pacific Beach Hotel where they perform ...
MY Thanksgiving was spent at the Kaneohe home of Gail & Red Morris, as I've done for years, dating back to when I dated their daughter, Malia. Today, she's half my age. I used to love to greet Red in a familial way, and his response was always a stern, "Knock off that 'Dad' stuff." That, at any rate, was the gist of what he said ...
From the mouth of Babes
I HOPE the I-triptophan takes its effect on me today as I'm off on a I-trip to San Francisco, the beginning of a monthlong vacation. Why so long? If it was good enough for George W. Bush, it's good enough for me. I'm reminded of what Babe Ruth said after signing a lucrative new contract. He was asked if he didn't feel funny making more money per year than Herbert Hoover. "Nah," said Ruth, "I had a better year than he did." Touché. See you Jan. 2 ...
