Readers give thanks
to good Samaritans

Happy Thanksgiving.

As is our tradition, we devote today's column to thanking those people who have helped or touched "Kokua Line" readers in some way.

Mahalo

>> To my neighbors, the Hoohuli Family. Kai, the son, alerted us and other neighbors to the house fire next door (early morning, Nov. 23) by going from house to house waking people. His father, William, helped clear the driveway of vehicles so the fire didn't get to them, then helped me hose down the side of my house to keep it from igniting. Their quick thinking and concern for their neighbors most likely saved lives and, although the fire destroyed the house, they helped keep the amount of damage to the area at a minimum. Thanks to all the others who helped but remain unidentified. Mahalo nui loa. -- Jim (and Yoshi) Fromm

>> To Loretta Manipon, an outstanding employee of the city Department of Parks & Recreation who maintains Waiau District Park on Kaahumanu Street. The park is a fairly large one and heavily used for all sorts of activities, mainly sporting events. All these events take a toll in the grassy areas, but because of her effort and dedication, they are always in a usable condition. The grass is always trimmed; the restrooms at Kaahumanu Street and the other on Komo Mai Drive are always clean. We know she takes pride in doing her work. She is truly a hard worker and always has a smile for everyone. It is not uncommon to see Loretta during the weekends cleaning the restrooms before an event at this very busy park. During my daily walk, I sometimes see graffiti on the restroom walls. It is cleaned up within a few days. It is always a pleasure to pass and see such a well-maintained park. We are just fortunate to have a person like Loretta. -- Frank A. Hori

>> To two gentlemen who helped following a recent traffic accident at the intersection of Kuliouou Road and Kalanianaole Highway. Though neither the other driver nor myself was injured, our cars were somewhat the worse for wear. While we were waiting for traffic officers to arrive, an off-duty police officer and an off-duty firefighter took time from their day to assist us. I am grateful and appreciative of their efforts. -- Stan Snodgrass

>> To the crossing guard who diligently works at the corner of Ala Lilikoi Street and Salt Lake Boulevard every school day, rain or shine. I pass there on my way to work, and this gentleman is always there for the children's safety. -- M.S.

>> To Oscar Ronquillo. Gosh, it's scary to be on the freeway at night when the red light goes up on the dashboard. We were coming back from a women's retreat at Mokuleia when that happened. We turned around and drove back to Wahiawa and found a gas station but no mechanic. A customer -- Oscar -- saw us reading the owner's manual and offered his help. He went home and brought back the radiator hose we needed, attached it, then drove all the way to Pearl City behind us to be sure everything was all right. Thank you, Oscar, from two perishable little old ladies. -- No Name
