McKinley's Werner Gatorade Player of the Year

CHICAGO >> McKinley quarterback Abel Werner has been named Hawaii High School Boys' Football Player of the Year for the second time by Gatorade and Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine.

Werner passed for 1,484 yards and 16 touchdowns through the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season and led the Tigers to a 5-4 record and into the first round of the OIA Division I playoffs.

"Abel is one of the most competitive young men in the state of Hawaii," McKinley coach William Moeava said in a release. "His leadership is exemplary and is like a coach on the field."

Werner also has a 3.2 grade point average, is on the student council and takes part in numerous activities.

Werner also won the award last season as a junior.

Golf pros win 31st John A. Burns Cup Challenge

The professionals took a 14-10 win over the amateurs after yesterday's final round of the 31st annual Gov. John A Burns Cup Challenge.

The "Governor's Cup" is modeled after the Ryder Cup, pitting the state's top 12 point winners among pros and amateurs from designated golf tournaments. Play opened Monday with 4-ball match play and foursome match play, then concluded yesterday with individual match play.

Professionals Lance Suzuki, Kevin Carll, Regan Lee and Kevin Hayashi won matches yesterday, as did amateurs Brandon Abreu, Kellen-Floyd Asao, Joe Phengsavath Jonathan Ota and Del-Marc Fujita. But the amateurs could not overcome a 5-1 pro lead in the previous day's foursome match play.

The professionals lead the series 20-10-1.

Rell Sunn Menehune Contest this weekend

More than 300 kids are expected to compete in the 27th annual Rell Sunn Menehune Contest Friday through Sunday at Makaha or Pokai Bay, surf pending.

The contest is set to start Friday at 8 a.m. with bodyboarding, shortboarding and longboarding events for ages 6-under, 7-9 and 10-12.

Many of Hawaii's top professional surfers grew up competing in the Rell Sunn Menehune Contest, and have supported the event through the years. A "tag-team heat" with keikis and pros is scheduled.

Keikis entered in the contest will receive a T-shirt, goody bag and lunch, with trophies and prizes for the finalists. For information call 262-2488.

Eddie opening ceremony Dec. 4 at Waimea Bay

The Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Event will have it opening ceremony Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. at Waimea Bay.

Twenty-four of the world's best big-wave riders, including defending champion Kelly Slater and Aikau's younger brother and former champion Clyde Aikau, are entered.

The event is a one-day affair, held with the surf measures at least 20 feet (40-foot faces). The holding period starts Dec. 5 and lasts until Feb. 28.

'Shop and Score' school program ends Tuesday

Kraft Foods Hawaii and the Hawaii Sports Network have partnered with Times Super Markets to conduct the third annual "Kraft Shop and Score" program from now through Dec. 2.

Through the program, parents, students, alumni and other community members can purchase Kraft products at Times Super Markets on Oahu with their Royal Card to accumulate points for the participating school of their choice. Each school will receive a share of a $50,000 credit to buy Adams, Adidas and Wilson Sporting Goods uniforms and equipment base on its number of points. The more products purchased on a school's behalf, the larger its share of the credit.

There are 38 public and private Oahu schools participating in the program.

UH golf camp set for Dec. 6-7

Hawaii will host its annual Warrior Golf Camp Dec. 6-7 at Les Murakami Stadium.

The camp will be conducted by UH head coach Ronn Miyashiro and assistant Norman-Ganin Asao, as well as members of this year's team. It is open to boys and girls ages 7-12, with the $75 payment due Dec. 1. Campers will provide their own equipment and shoes are required.
