Aloha limits policy on expired coupons

Aloha Airlines has cracked down on a policy to not let passengers used expired flight coupons, after some passengers were told they could get extensions.

Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines announced in January that they were going to discontinue the use of coupons, but Aloha agents afterward told customers they could get an extension for expired coupons for a service charge.

Then, in October, Aloha issued an internal memo to tell customer service agents that expired coupons would not be accepted, Aloha spokesman Stu Glauberman said yesterday. Many coupons expired Sept. 30, and Aloha's move is in keeping with the initial announcement of honoring coupons only up to their expiration date, Glauberman said.

There are some exceptions, such as for coupons used by state workers and certain coupon books, Glauberman said.

"The marketplace was so accustomed to using interisland coupons, and there were so many out there" that expired coupons were extended as a courtesy, Glauberman said.

Hawaiian Airlines hasn't made a decision about its policy on coupon renewal and expiration, and no changes have been made at this point, a spokesman said.
