Hawaii Pacific's run ends in regional final

A day after upsetting No. 1 UC San Diego to reach the Pacific region final, the Hawaii Pacific volleyball team was swept by Cal State San Bernardino 30-28, 30-21, 30-22 last night at La Jolla, Calif.

"San Bernardino just came out with fire and we couldn't match it," HPU coach Tita Ahuna said. "All of their hitters dominated, they finally did it."

The Coyotes had been ousted by Hawaii teams in each of the past three regional tournaments and placed four players on the all-tournament team along with HPU's Barbara Martin and Vera Oliveira, who finished the season with 1,033 assists.

Flavia Brakling led the Sea Warriors with 14 kills and 15 digs for the 23rd double-double of her career, but she got little help. Martin and Nadica Karleusa were HPU's next-most-effective hitters with six kills each. HPU only hit .122 in the match, while the Coyotes hit .278 behind Kim Ford's 20 kills and Cristen Trent's 42 assists.

The Sea Warriors, who were seeded fifth and beat the fourth- and top-seeded teams in the tournament, will lose only one player.

"The future looks very promising," Ahuna said. "I think it was a very good season for a very young team. The future starts now."

The Sea Warriors will return home at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
