1969: ‘Hap’ Larsen
faces udder truth of life
on Kauai

POOR "Hap" Larsen! He's the manager of the newly opened Hanalei Colony Resort on Kauai, but at times feels more like a cowboy. Seems there are cattle roaming free around the resort and they take to all the newly planted shrubs and plants like a kid takes to ice cream. Hence Hap is forever chasing the cattle away -- except when he meets a bull -- then HE gets chased away. Perhaps if he were to start serving up fresh steaks from these cows, their owner would take proper steps to control them. (Nov. 26, 1969) ...

WINGING in for the holidays is Yvonne Elliman, the young Hawaii gal who sang the role of Mary Magdalene on the "Jesus Christ Superstar" album. She'll arrive Dec. 15 and promoter Tom Moffatt hopes to feature her as a soloist in an upcoming show. Hope it comes off! And for those who've not heard the remarkable "Jesus Christ Superstar" album, it'll be played in its entirety Sunday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on KPOI-FM. (Nov. 26, 1970) ...

MAKING it: Al Michaels, who's flying in from Cincinnati to do the play-by-play of the Nebraska-UH debacle, is very much in demand these days. The "voice" of the Cincinnati Reds has been signed by ABC to handle a big bowling tournament, and the really big news is that NBC has hired Al to work side-by-side with Curt Gowdy in telecasting the Winter Olympics from Sapporo, Japan. It's readily apparent that Al Michaels is going to be one of the best known names in the sports broadcast field. (Nov. 24, 1971) ...

WHEN Jane Fonda (who is one of the most up-tight women we've ever met) was in town last week she suggested that many members of the carrier USS Coral Sea's crew would refuse to sail for Far Eastern waters. The ship sailed Saturday, and sure enough -- there were AWOL's. Two of them. (Nov. 29, 1971) ...

GOLD Bond Stamps man Ed Brennan and wife Jerry have been trout fishing in New Zealand with New Zealand Olympic star Simon Dickie plus local adman John McDermott and wife Bobbye. Jerry Brennan pulled in a 6-pound trout, thereby showing up the old man, and isn't that always the way? (Nov. 29, 176) ...

BANDLEADER Del Courtney, now conducting "tea dances" at the Royal Hawaiian, reminisces that localites Jack deMello and Julian Kaye both played in his band in San Francisco. Courtney also recalled playing at the Alexander Young Roof Garden back in 1935. (Nov. 26, 1978) ...

LOCAL adman Marty Schiller of Ogilvy & Mather will be glued to his TV set -- well, figuratively, anyway -- Sunday and Monday when "The Executioner's Song," the film directed by his brother, Lawrence Schiller, airs on KHON-TV. People magazine describes the story of the life, love and death of Gary Gilmore as "compelling." Director Schiller, who early on purchased the rights to the Gilmore story and commissioned author Norman Mailer to write both a book and screenplay, should have a good grasp of the story since he was on the scene for much of what takes place in the film, including Gilmore's execution. (Nov. 26, 1982) ...

FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Kahala Hilton exec chef Martin Wysse who left the hotel to open his own restaurant, the Swiss Inn in Niu Valley, Hans-Peter Hager departed his exec chef position of the Mauna Lani Bay Resort and is now owner of Edelweiss, the former Red Water Cafe, in Waimea. (Nov. 28, 1983) ...

JUST when you think all the clever ways of naming men's rooms and women's rooms are used up, along comes Dolly Parton, whose Dockside Plantation conveniences are labeled "Buoys" and "Gulls." Very nautical, but nice. (Nov. 24, 1987) ...

LOCALITE Ann Harada, Punahou '81 and Brown grad, opens Dec. 19 opposite B.D. Wong on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theater. She plays the part of Comrade Chin in this, her first Broadway role. (Nov. 29, 1988) ...
