Moe wins Hawaii State Open
Northern California's Kris Moe shot a final-round 70 to win the open division of the 2003 Prince Resorts Hawaii State Open at Hapuna Golf Course yesterday.
Moe finished the tournament with a three-day total of 222, edging Hilo's Lance Taketa, who finished three strokes back after closing with a final-round 69.
Stephanie Kono won the women's division despite shooting a final-round 82 to hold off Christine Kim who finished one-stroke back with a three-day total of 239.
In the senior division, George Newbeck finished on top with a three-day total of 222, defeating Larry Stubblefield by two strokes.
Hawaii Pacific seeded fifth in regional
The 19th-ranked Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team has been seeded 5th in the six-team, single elimination NCAA Division II Pacific Region Volleyball Championship which begins Thursday in San Diego, California.
The Sea Warriors will take on fourth-seeded Cal-State Bakersfield at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded and nationally No. 1 ranked UC-San Diego on Friday.
HPU is 4-3 all-time against Cal-State Bakersfield, with their last match taking place in 2000, when the Sea Warriors became the first NCAA Division II school to finish with a perfect 28-0 record.
The Sea Warriors were the only Hawaii team invited after Brigham Young-Hawaii forfeited all of its conference games Friday for using an ineligible player. The Seasiders were No. 2 in the region before forfeiting.
Widom wins Honolulu Futures Tournament
Sixth-seeded Scott Widom upset second-seeded Lamine Ouahab 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win his first career USTA Futures tournament at Diamond Head Tennis Center yesterday.
Widom could not pull off the sweep, however, as him and teammate Scott Lipsky were defeated in the men's doubles final by Trace Fielding and Keith From in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (7). 6-1.
All five finalists are scheduled to play in the Hilton Waikaloa Villages Futures main draw which begins tomorrow.
Stanley leads U.S. over Canada in World Cup
The U.S. men's volleyball team beat Canada 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 yesterday on the opening day of the World Cup at Tokyo.
Former UH player Clay Stanley led the Americans with 23 points, including 19 on spikes. Sebastien Ruetta led Canada with 15 points.
"The first match is always difficult because of the new environment," U.S. coach Douglas Beal said. "It's important not to lose many sets because I am sure this will be a close tournament."
QB Club's fall fund-raiser/mixer on Wednesday
The Honolulu Quarterback Club is hosting its fall fund-raiser and mixer Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the LaSalle Room at the Pagoda Restaurant.
The cost is $10 per person. There will be pupus, no-host cocktails, UH football films and numerous door prizes.
Sony Open seeking volunteers
Sony Open in Hawaii organizers are looking for volunteers to help operate the tournament's Tourcast service at next year's event.
The service allows fans to follow the shots of every player during the tournament. Volunteer responsibilities may include player identification or operating laser equipment to document the placement of the ball on the course.

Volleyball club tryouts set for next Saturday
The Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club is holding its inaugural tryouts for two boys teams on Nov. 22 at the Hawaii Baptist Academy gym.
Tryouts are from 1-2:30 p.m. for the 14-under team and 2:30-4 p.m. for the 16-under team. Players are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to their respective practice in order to register.
