A GREAT LUAU: Sam Choy, third from left, served up a great luau as he and the Makaha Sons -- Moon Kauakahi, left, John Koko and Jerome Koko -- celebrated the release of their new cookbook and CD, "Sam Choy & the Makaha Sons' A Hawaiian Luau," at Sam Choy's Breakfast Lunch & Crab on Wednesday. Bennett Hymer, of Mutual Publishing, helped welcome the guests. Sharlene Aoki Oshiro was the life of the post-party party.

A GREAT DEBUT: DJ Shinchan stepped in when the scheduled sound crew flaked out on the "soft" opening of the Velvet Lounge on Thursday. VL owner George Hill indicated that the new "ultra lounge" will be a big improvement over Grumpy's, the previous club on the site.

A PROUD DAY FOR HAWAIIANS: Kale Chang, left, congratulated Randie Kamuela Fong and Kihei de Silva on the official release of the Kamehameha Schools' new album, "I Mua E Na Poki'i," and the launch of a new Hawaiian cultural Web site (www.kaiwakiloumoku/ksbe.edu) on Thursday. Kamehameha Schools students sang and danced the hula when the festivities moved outside the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel.
