Tip drill turns Hawaii's day sour in Nevada

It looked like it was coming together for Hawaii in the third quarter yesterday, even after Chance Kretschmer scored on a 1-yard run -- Nevada's only offensive touchdown in its 24-14 victory over visiting Hawaii.

UH still led 14-12.

But things quickly fell apart for UH, like on the next play from scrimmage. Two Wolf Pack seniors named Junior ganged up for the biggest play on Nevada's Senior Day.

Quarterback Tim Chang dropped back to pass on first down from his own 20. His throw was deflected by blitzing outside linebacker Carl LaGrone Jr., into the hands of defensive tackle Derek Kennard Jr.

Kennard ran untouched 11 yards for his first touchdown at any level of football.

"We ran a stunt. I looked around and our blitzing linebacker tipped the ball," Kennard said. "I was right there and grabbed it and just went to the end zone with it."

Kennard's father is a former Nevada standout and Dallas Cowboys player who attended yesterday's game.

[ COMING UP ]

Army coming after wounded Warriors

The Warriors take on some future real-life warriors Saturday at Aloha Stadium, as Hawaii plays Army in UH's first home game since it beat Texas-El Paso 31-15 on Oct. 25.

The Black Knights are 0-11 overall and 0-8 in Conference USA after losing 34-14 to Houston yesterday, and could be the perfect tonic for a Hawaii team in need of a victory to clinch a Hawaii Bowl bid.

Army is 1-22 over the past two seasons.

This marks the first meeting between the two teams. UH coach June Jones said he wants to schedule the service academies as often as possible because of the military presence in Hawaii.
