Hawaii Prep earns berth into state tournament
Michael Kopra rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown to give Hawaii Prep a 42-0 win over Konawaena to capture the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's Division II championship yesterday.
Kopra also kicked a pair of field goals and three extra points for Ka Makani, who only threw the ball six times. The Wildcats passed the ball 20 times, but only completed five and had two of them picked off and returned for touchdowns by Zach Say.
Hawaii Prep will play Lahainaluna on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in the first round of the D-II state tournament.
Carney to sign with national champions
Sean Carney, the senior setter for the Iolani School boys volleyball team, will sign his letter of intent tomorrow morning to play for Lewis University. The Flyers defeated Pepperdine in five last May to win the national title match.
On Friday, Carney led the Raiders to their first title in boys volleyball, defeating two-time defending champion Kamehameha in three.
Eckert headed to Cal: Iolani swimmer Mark Eckert is expected to sign a letter of intent to attend California-Berkeley tomorrow.
Eckert set state records in the 200 free and 500 free last year.
Higashiyama clings to lead at Hawaii State Open
Troy Higashiyama shot a 79 but kept his lead in the second round of the Hawaii State Open at Hapuna Golf Course.
Higashiyama, an amateur who entered play with a 1-stroke lead, stayed ahead of surging professional Kevin Hayashi, who fired a 73 yesterday. The Big Island resident enters today's final round at 151. Kris Moe is third at 152.
Stephanie Kono leads the women's division by five strokes over Christine Kim. Kirk Smith leads the senior division by two strokes over Larry Stubblefield, George Newbeck and Ken Springer.
Postponed USAC races will be run today
Last night's USAC Sprint Car Series races at the Hawaii Motor Speedway were postponed due to rain, so the races, which pit 12 of Hawaii's best racers against 12 top drivers from the USAC Southwest Series, will be run today.
Gates will open at 8 a.m., with races starting two hours later. Admission will be free, according to speedway marketing director Dita Holifield. For more information, call 375-6969.
Widom surprises Clark to reach Futures final
Former Miami standout Todd Widom beat top-seeded Peter Clarke 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the finals of the Honolulu Futures tennis tournament at the Diamond Head Tennis Center yesterday.
Widom will meet Algeria's Lamine Ouahab in the final at 10 a.m. today. Ouahab swept past Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. Today's winner gets $1,350 and 18 ATP ranking points.
Widom will team up with Scott Lipsky against Trace Fielding and Keith From in the doubles final immediately after playing Ouahab.
Talking football at QB Club
Former Green Bay Packer Joe Francis will join UH defensive live coach Vantz Singletary and UH basketball coach Riley Wallace at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Francis prepped at Kamehameha and played at Oregon State before moving on to the pros.
The club will also honor Hawaii soccer player Natasha Kai as its sportsperson of the month. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu with the program to follow at noon.
Jones bringing Lumpkin to Na Koa: Hawaii football coach June Jones and defensive coordinator George Lumpkin will review Hawaii's loss to Nevada at Na Koa's weekly meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Buchanan paces Rainbow Wahine in final meet
Dana Buchanan was the first Hawaii finisher in the NCAA West regional in cross country yesterday, running her first 6K of the year in 22 minutes, 45 seconds.
Buchanan, who has been Hawaii's top finisher in its last four meets, finished in 90th place. Hawaii placed 22nd as a team. Stanford won the regional, with Alicia Craig taking medalist honors.
