Kapolei High School's girls, led by individual champion Shaina Carnate, rode a strong third series to a state bowling title yesterday at Hilo Lanes on the Big Island, ending Pearl City's three-year run at the top.
The Hurricanes surged past first-day leader Baldwin with an 847 in Game 7 and solidified the lead with an 870 in the next game. They stumbled to an 802 in the closing game for a 7,300 total and held off Baldwin -- which closed with games of 865 and 850 -- by 16 points and Pearl City -- which charged through the final series with a 2,549 total -- by 48.
Carnate rolled a 617 yesterday to overcome a seven-pin deficit and beat Maui's Malia Baldovi with a 1,738 total. First-day leader Baldovi finished with a 1,684. The win gave Kapolei its third straight individual girls champion. Carnate won two years ago and Samantha Masuda won last year. Masuda finished 10th this year.
In the boys tournament, Moanalua, led by individual champion Cy Hiyane, put up a phenomenal 2,982 series yesterday for an 8,460 total and beat Waiakea by 350 pins. The Menehunes posted the event's only two 1,000-plus scores in Games 7 (1,025) and 8 (1,060). Mililani finished another 57 pins back in third.
Hiyane built on the lead he established on the opening day with a 646 series yesterday for a 1,916 total -- 45 pins ahead of Kapolei's Kananiomau Villa. Waiakea's Cody Urasaki closed with a 280 to round out the top three, 134 pins out of the lead.
