The boys and girls state volleyball championships open tomorrow with both reigning champions, unseeded this year, seeing opening-round action.
Two-time defending boys champion Kamehameha, led by coach Pono Maa, plays Ka'u in tomorrow's 8 p.m. feature match. In the day's first three matches, Maui faces Campbell, Waiakea meets Kalaheo and Mililani takes on Kauai champion Waimea.
The winners face seeded teams Wednesday. The top seed is Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Iolani. The Raiders will attempt to become the first school other than Kamehameha or Punahou to win the boys title since Roosevelt completed a three-year title run in 1979.
The other seeds are Maui champion Seabury Hall, Kahuku of the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Big Island champ Kealakehe.
Matches on the first three days will be held at McKinley's gym, while Friday's matches, including the championship, will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawaii's lower campus.
Reigning girls champion Kahuku, with coach Mona Ah-Hoy, opens play tomorrow against Kamehameha-Maui in an 8 p.m. match at Hemmeter Fieldhouse on Punahou's campus. The first three days of the girls tourney will be played at Hemmeter, with the final day also at the Sheriff Center.
Tomorrow's first three matches are: Hawaii Prep vs. Roosevelt, Garden Isle champion Kauai vs. Moanalua and Kamehameha-Oahu vs. Kealakehe.
The top girls seed is Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalani, followed by Punahou of the ILH, St. Joseph of the Big Island and Maui champion Seabury Hall.
Tickets at all venues will be available at the door.
