DeSoto downs Byrnes in Oxbow Pro

Hawaii's Duane DeSoto ruined Australian Jye Byrnes' hopes for another win with an upset at the Oxbow Pro Longboard at Manu Bay in Raglan, New Zealand, yesterday.

DeSoto beat the world's third-ranked surfer on a tiebreaker after being knotted up with scores of 14 after the heat was finished. DeSoto had the highest individual wave -- a ride worth eight points -- and advanced off that.

Kekoa Uemura beat Anri Nabeshima of Japan 15.25-7.75 to join DeSoto in the third round. Keegan Edwards lost his heat to Mathew Moir of South Africa 15.5-14.15.

Bonga Perkins is scheduled to surf his third round heat against Justin Redman of Australia as soon as the surf is ready.

Hawaii Pacific tennis player Michael Maata is expected to join local phenom Dennis Lajola and UH's Malino Oda in the Honolulu Futures tennis tournament at Ala Moana Beach Park and Diamond Head Tennis Center beginning today.

The tournament is a United States Tennis Association event and will feature 32 players once the main draw begins tomorrow. The eight-day tournament is offering $15,000 in prize money and the finals are scheduled for Nov. 17.

Hapuna Golf Course to host Hawaii State Open
