Tale spinners gather
In celebration of National Storytelling Month and Children's Book Week, the Hawaii State Public Library System will present the 2003 Talespinner's Festival of the Pacific, next Monday to Nov. 22.

Nyla Ching-Fujii and Jeffry Stephen Babb are among those who will entertain during the Talespinner's Festival at the libraries.

Four storytellers will perform together throughout the islands during the free festival. Events are as follows:
Next Monday: Waimea Public Library, Kauai, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 19: Kahului Public Library, Maui, 9 to 11 a.m.
Nov. 19: Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library, Big Island, 6 to 8 p.m.
Nov. 22: Hawaii State Library Edna Allyn Children's Room, Oahu, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
African-American master storyteller Baba Jamal Koram will be the featured performer. Koram, who lives in Virginia, presents the history, humor, people, music and lore of African and African-American cultures through Aesop's fables, stories and song. He is scheduled to perform "African Stories in the Americas," tales from the African migration.
Sharing the spotlight will be Hawaiian storyteller Nyla Ching-Fujii, bluesman/balladeer Jeffry Stephen Babb and Japanese-American storyteller Dann Seki.
The family program is designed for ages 5 and up. To request a sign language interpreter, call the hosting library five to seven business days prior to the program.

Writers celebrated
Double your reading pleasure this week at free events presented by the University of Hawaii-Manoa English Department and Bamboo Ridge Press:
"He Leo Hou, A New Voice": Bamboo Ridge Press hosts the launch of a collection of plays by Alani Apio ("Kamau"), Tammy Haili'opua Baker ("Kupua"), Lee Cataluna ("Da Mayah") and Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl ("Ka Wai Ola"); Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. reception and 7:30 p.m. reading. The book is $15 in paperback.
Hawaii Fall Celebration of Writers: The fifth annual event, themed "Visions of (Dis)Location: Native, Immigrant, Settler," takes place Thursday at the UH Kuykendall Auditorium. Apio, Kneubuhl, Joy Harjo and Kathleen Tyau will participate in a panel, "Who Owns the Past?" from noon to 1:30 p.m., with Gary Pak moderating. A second panel, "The Stories 'They' Tell About Us," runs 3 to 4:30 p.m., featuring Baker, Cataluna, Martin Espada and Haunani-Kay Trask; Rodney Morales moderating.
