Retreat to Mauna Lani

Mauna Lani Resort is introducing its first Ke Kumu 'O Mauna Lani healing retreat Nov. 13 to 17, a gathering of spiritually renewing events, lessons and presentations.

"All Ke Kumu components and offerings come from this spirit of place," said the resort's Hawaiian historian Danny Akaka, who will lead discussions with local kupuna (elders), kahu (Hawaiian priests), and healers, on the history and legends of Mauna Lani and why this area is known as the piko, or center, of physical and spiritual healing on the Big Island.

International masters who will share their expertise include Deepak Chopra, described as "the poet-prophet of alternative medicine," who was selected as one of the "Top 100 Icons and Heroes of the Century in 1999" by Time magazine; Dr. Florence Comite, founder of Women's Health at Yale and is an Associate Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine; Jok-Keng Lee, a registered Chinese herbalist with Malaysia's Ministry of Health; Ed Mann, percussionist, composer and Gong/Sound Workshop facilitator; and Boldijarre Koronczay, herbalist and master of Europe esthetics and massage.

Four-day kama'aina packages, including four nights accommodations at Mauna Lani Bay, start at $1,130 (garden view, single occupancy), $1,210 (ocean view, single occupancy), $1,600 (garden view, double occupancy), and $1,680 (ocean view, double occupancy) plus applicable taxes. Other room categories are also available. In addition to accommodations, the package rates include the following program workshops and culinary demonstrations:

>> Opening reception Nov. 13

>> Daily workshops and interactive seminars in life balance, women's health, anti-aging, fitness, spirituality, nutrition, yoga, Hawaiian healing, Chinese and Ayurvedic spa therapies.

>> Hands-on demonstrations by James Beard Award nominee Edwin Goto and other chefs specializing in spa cuisine.

>> Final Night Spa Garden Party Nov. 16

Individual Day Passes are also available for those who wish to attend the event on specific days. Rates begin at $100 per day. A $200 Evening F&B Event Pass, which includes the welcome reception and a Spa Garden Party, is also being offered.
