The Cat in the Hat is the celebrity of choice Saturday.


We refer, of course, to green eggs and ham. Try them, try them when the Kahala Mandarin Oriental marks the opening of "The Cat in the Hat" movie with "The Cat in the Hat" Tea Party, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Waialae Ballroom.

Scrambled Green Eggs and Ham are on the menu, along with One Fish Tuna Fish Sandwiches, Chocolate Chip Flip, Thing 1 and Thing 2: Sneetches' Scones, the Chocolate Chunk Gunk that Got Thunk Cake and other Seuss-themed delights.

Radio personality Tom Moffatt will read "The Cat in the Hat," and prizes will be awarded in the "Most Hats on the Head," "Tallest Hat" and "Most Memorized Lines from 'Cat in the Hat'" contests.

Cost is $25 (children under 2 free), which includes a goodie bag for each paying child. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the national First Book organization. Reservations required. Call 739-8890.

Special Events

Veterans Day special: L'Uraku restaurant offers a $16 four-course lunch in celebration of the Veterans Day holiday, tomorrow and Tuesday. Lunch includes choice of appetizer, green salad, entree and dessert. Call 955-0552.

Premier Bordeaux and Burgundy Wine Event: William Gladstone Imports hosts a tasting of 2000 bordeaux, premier cru and grand cru burgundies from France, Hungary and California, 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Hyatt Regency Resort Makai Ballroom. Cost is $40 in advance, $50 at the door. Tickets available at Tamura's, Wine Stop and Liquor Collection, or call 262-8345.

Joseph Phelps Wine Dinner: The Bay Club at the Kapalua Bay Hotel & Ocean Villas on Maui hosts a five-course wine dinner, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Hawaii Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes Hana Honey and Orange-Glazed Sweet Prawns (with Viognier 2001), Prosciutto-Wrapped Opakapaka (Ovation 2000), Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Smoked Plums (Le Mistral 2000), Five-Spice Roasted Breast of Duck (Insignia 2000) and Grilled Nectarine Tower with Wild Lilikoi Mousse (Eisrebe 2002).
