Police charge 3 men
in 2 killings
The slayings took place within
a week in Aiea and Pearl City
Honolulu police have charged three men in two killings that occurred within a week.
Rosalino Ramos, Kevin Harris and Micah Kanahele were charged yesterday with murdering and robbing 49-year-old Greg Morishima at 99-121 Pamoho Place in Aiea on Oct. 26. The three men were also charged earlier this week for allegedly murdering and robbing Guylan Nuuhiwa last Saturday in Pearl City.
Another man, Jason Rumbawa, was also charged yesterday with murder and robbery in Morishima's death.
Police affidavits state that in a police interview, Harris said he, Ramos, Kanahele and a man he knew only as "Jay" but later identified as Rumbawa went to the Pamoho address to commit a robbery. Another man, identified only as "Tony," drove them to the location.
Police said all four men were carrying firearms and had their faces masked as they walked down the driveway. According to the affidavit, Harris said that when the suspects approached Morishima, who was sitting down in the garage, he made a comment about the masks they were wearing and that they were "early for Halloween."
Harris told police that was when the other three suspects -- Kanahele, Ramos and "Jay" -- fired their guns at the man in the chair, according to the affidavits. All four then jumped into a sport utility vehicle driven by "Tony" and fled, police said.
Last Saturday, according to police, Ramos, Kanahele and Harris met two men, Nuuhiwa and Winston Domingo, in the Longs Drugs Store parking lot at 850 Kamehameha Highway. Police said Kanahele shot Nuuhiwa six times, killing him, after a fight over four ounces of marijuana. The affidavit also states that Kanahele shot and wounded Domingo as he ran away.
In the Pearl City case, Kanahele is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, robbery and several drug and firearm offenses. Harris and Ramos are both charged with robbery in the Pearl City case.
In the Aiea case, Kanahele, Ramos and Rumbawa are charged with second-degree murder. All three suspects, along with Harris, are also charged with robbery.
Kanahele is being held in lieu of $1.5 million bail -- $1 million for the Pearl City shooting and $500,000 for the Aiea shooting. Ramos is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail for the Aiea case and $100,000 bail for the Pearl City case. Harris is being held in lieu of $100,000 for Pearl City and $200,000 for Aiea. Rumbawa is being held in lieu of $300,000 for the Aiea shooting.
Harris told police that during the Aiea shooting, he was carrying a shotgun, which he never took out of the bag, while Kanahele was armed with a rifle, Ramos was carrying a .32 and Rumbawa was armed with a .22.
During the arrest of the four suspects this week, police have recovered a rifle and a pistol, both of which are being tested to see if they were used in either case. Sources close to the investigation said police still have not found the .32 that Rumbawa was alleged to have been carrying.
All four suspects have criminal histories, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center. Kanahele has two felony firearm convictions; Ramos has one felony firearm conviction and a misdemeanor terroristic threatening conviction; and Harris has two misdemeanor convictions for assault and terroristic threatening.
Rumbawa has five felony convictions for multiple counts of terroristic threatening, reckless endangerment and a firearm offense for an Aug. 15, 1998, incident in which he fired five shots at partygoers at a Mililani baby luau. State records show that Rumbawa was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.
