Richard Griggs was named Advocate of the Year for 2003 by the state Legislature's Keiki Caucus and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Gov. Linda Lingle and Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona congratulated Griggs yesterday afternoon in a ceremony at Washington Place.

Richard Griggs, an ROTC instructor at Nanakuli High School, was named Advocate of the Year for 2003 yesterday by the state Legislature's Keiki Caucus and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Griggs, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, and other advocates were honored at a Washington Place ceremony.
Other honorees:
>> Jill Kuramoto, of KITV, and Jody Shiroma-Perreira, of Sassy and G Magazine, were co-winners of the Outstanding Advocate in the Field of Media.
>> Friends of Children's Justice Center Maui was named the Outstanding Agency/Organization.
>> Griggs and Darren Johnson, a coach at Kailua High School, were the Outstanding Advocates in Education.
>> Gordie Morris, the founder of a sailing class for at-risk youths, was the Outstanding Advocate of the Individual as a Volunteer.
>> Mark Jeffers, founder of the Storybook Theater of Hawaii, children's educational television and other programs on Kauai; and Sylvia Yuen, director of the Center on Family at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, were winners of the Outstanding Individual as a Professional award.
>> Aloun Farms won the small-business award, and the Hawaii Medical Service Association was honored with the large-business award.
>> Jennifer Ching, board member of the Outreach for Grieving Youth Alliance, was the Outstanding Youth Advocate.
>> Neighbor island winners were Alison Way, of Lahaina, a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club in West Maui; Terry Lock, of Wailuku, a youth volunteer; Lyn McNeff, of Wailuku, director of the Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. Head Start program; and state Sen. Suzanne Chun Oakland.
