Police commish cops plea
but may keep job

Honolulu Police Commissioner Leonard Leong is mulling over whether he should resign that post after pleading no contest to making illegal political donations to Mayor Jeremy Harris' campaign.

Our heart goes out to him because, although he admits he broke the law, it wasn't a really big law, and should committing a criminal act really keep one from heading up a board that appoints the city's top law enforcement officer and disciplines cops who commit boo-boos themselves? It's not like Leong killed anyone, right?

Hang in there, Lenny buddy. Police commissioners aren't role models. Well, they are, but ...

Now the news:

Biddies bag burglar

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) >> Confronted with an armed intruder in their home, two women plied him with a ham sandwich and rum until he became groggy and passed out.

Cathy Ord, 60, and Rose Bucher, 63, said they tried to befriend the man after he broke into their kitchen with a sawed-off shotgun. After giving him the sandwich and rum, they suggested he shower and shave so he could "sort of be disguised in his getaway," Ord said. They called police after the intruder fell asleep.

("Such a nice man," said Ord. "But he didn't touch a bite of his arsenic carrot cake.")

Woman whomps weptile

DARWIN, Australia (AP) >> A woman punched and kicked a 9-foot-long crocodile to free her teenage nephew from its jaws during an attack in the outback.

Manual Gandigorrtij, 19, was loading wild geese into a boat on a creek bank when the croc dragged him into the water. Margaret Rinybuma, 53, dived in and let her fists and feet fly. The croc gave up and retreated under water.

("I was really hoping for a ham sandwich and a spot of rum," the croc said later.)

Lion kittens learn lesson

HELENA, Mont. (AP) >> A game warden used hot water to free three mountain lion kittens frozen to railroad tracks.

The kittens became stuck after trying to cross the tracks after swimming through a creek in the 12-degree weather.

(Needless to say, the kittens, who also lost their mittens, didn't get any pie.)

'Honolulu Lite' on Sunday:

In honor of the 15th anniversary of Robert Fulghum's groundbreaking book "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," "Honolulu Lite" on Sunday will present "All I Really Need to Know I Learned at Steven's Super Service Gas Station in Aiea."

Quote me on this:

"I was born modest -- not all over, but in spots." -- Mark Twain
