Gunman had ‘ice’
in his system

Ronald Lowery had crystal methamphetamine in his system when he was fatally shot Saturday in Waianae by police, who fired at least 30 rounds, according to authorities.

Chief Medical Examiner Kanthi Von Guenthner said Lowery tested positive for "ice," but the amount could not be determined.

Von Guenthner said the 34-year-old died of multiple internal injuries due to multiple gunshot wounds, but she would not provide the number or location of those wounds until police complete their investigation.

Lowery had 16 convictions, mostly misdemeanors, with three felonies for escape and weapons charges.

Police said Lowery fired twice at officers with a sawed-off, double-barrel shotgun before they returned fire. Police said that prior to the shooting, Lowery had been speeding and driving erratically in a stolen car.

Lowery fled from the police, abandoned the car, and he and a 16-year-old girl got into a van driven by a Waianae woman.

The van was later cornered by police on Old Government Road near Plantation Road where the shootout occurred.

Lowery, who worked for a moving company, was married. He had a baby girl on the way and five sons from a previous marriage.
