Digital concert is
intimate at Pipeline

DON'T KNOW if a busy Halloween weekend had anything to do with it, but Monday night's Digital Underground concert turned out to be a lot more intimate of a performance than I thought it would be.

Not that I'm complaining -- the lack of a crowd at Pipeline Cafe meant I could get within a few feet of founding members Shock-G and Money B., giving me a great view of the action as they nailed all of their signature hits.

Local openers Sudden Rush also turned in a good performance, even though the crowd was clearly there to see the headlining act. Too bad more people didn't show up for this one -- it doesn't look like we'll ever have the chance to see Humpty Hump do his dance here again, since the group plans to split up next year ...

HOUSE FANS have a new monthly party to call their own starting tonight in Waikiki. As it looks right now, "Our House" is scheduled for every first Thursday of the month at JC's Level 2 (that bar next to Deja Vu on Kuhio Avenue).

Doors open at 10 p.m. for "Our House," with DJs Akio, Badmouth, Keebler, Universoul and Danny Yun holding it down on the decks. House fans 21 and over are invited; call 923-5828 ...

TONIGHT ALSO marks the start of a new round of competition over at Studio 1 during "First Thursdays."

As always, tonight should bring spoken-word enthusiasts out of the woodwork for a chance to be part of the "2004 HawaiiSlam Team" that will represent the 50th state at next year's National Poetry Slam. DJ Rebel Girl will be there to provide a vinyl soundtrack for the festivities, while Chef Quadsay serves up pupus for those in attendance.

Along with a live art installation and free massages, "First Thursdays" also features an open-mic session once the night's competition is over. Doors open at 7 p.m. tonight; $3 gets you in before 8 p.m., when the cover jumps to $5. Call 387-9964 ...

AND ON Monday, be sure to stop by Zanzabar Nightclub for a fund-raising event to benefit the Musical Youth of Hawaii.

Organized by James Coles, "Suga Suga" gets started at 8 p.m. with DJs Mike D, Krazy K and Wreck holding it down on the professional tip, and DJs Betty, Kaoru, Trancis and Wun representing the up-and-coming talent out of the MYH lab.

After six months of teaching keiki about mixing records and digital audio production, MYH needs help raising money to open two new locations. If you can, cruise through and help out this worthy cause ...
