Shimonovich back in practice
Hawaii center Haim Shimonovich returned to practice with the Rainbow Warrior basketball team yesterday after an MRI showed no tear in his injured right Achilles.
Shimonovich sat out most of the first two weeks of practice with tendinitis and had the MRI done yesterday morning to make sure there wasn't further injury.
"It showed there's no tear and there's no danger of completely tearing the Achilles, so I just have to try to play with the pain," Shimonovich said.
Broten in town to take on Hawaiian Airlines
Gold medal winning hockey player Neil Broten and a group of NHL alumni will take on a team of Hawaiian Airlines employees and other NHL alumni Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ice Palace.
Celebrities Alan Thicke and Brendan Fehr will join former NHL players Aaron Broten, Ian Turnbull, Curt Bennett and Ted McAneeley on the ice. Proceeds will go to Honolulu Minor Hockey.
Hayashi, Tanaka win at Pearl Country Club
Kevin Hayashi of Mauna Kea Resort and amateur partner Elton Tanaka shot a 67 in a best ball format to hold on and win the Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl Country Club yesterday.
Hayashi and Tanaka shot a 59 in the first round for a three-stroke lead over Jeff Ferry and Robbie Yoshimura.
Warriors win at home: Manarii Gauthier shot a 1-under par 71 to finish seventh and help Hawaii tie for first with South Carolina at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate tournament yesterday.
Odelius leads Wahine: Sara Odelius shot a 76 yesterday to lead the Hawaii women's team to 11th-place at the Kent Yeul Invitational at Kapolei Golf Course yesterday.
Seasiders up to second
The Brigham Young-Hawaii (18-2) volleyball team jumped from sixth to second in the American Volleyball Coaches poll yesterday, tying with region rival Cal State San Bernardino (20-4).
UC San Diego (20-4) rose to the top spot despite receiving fewer first-place votes (eight) than the Seasiders (10).
Hawaii Pacific (15-5) dropped from 17th to 19th.
Lo honored: BYUH setter Kaala Lo was named the Pacific West Conference's Player of the Week after leading the Seasiders to three wins last week. Lo is second nationally in assists per game.
Bartels clinches Foster's Tour
Hawaii's Melanie Bartels won the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Santa Cruz, Calif., yesterday, clinching the Foster's Pro Surfing Tour over Prue Jeffries.
Bartels earned $5,000 for her win and is closing in on earning a spot in the WCT.
Rob Machado earned $12,000 for winning the men's title.
