Hayashi, Tanaka lead Pro-Scratch tournament

Kevin Hayashi's hole-in-one on Pearl Country Club's seventh hole helped the Mauna Kea Resort pro and his partner, Elton Tanaka, take the first-round lead at the Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship.

The tournament, which pairs a professional with an amateur in a two-man scramble format, concludes today. Hayashi and Tanaka carded a round of 59 yesterday to put them three strokes ahead of three teams.

Hawaii tied for fourth: Matt Kodama shot a 5-over par to tie for 18th after the second round of the Turtle bay Intercollegiate tournament yesterday, leading the Warriors into a tie for fourth.

South Carolina and Virginia are tied for first with UH-Hilo 11th.

UH's Mackey wins WAC swimming honor

Hawaii freshman Nicole Mackey was named the Western Athletic Conference's swimming and diving athlete of the week yesterday.

Mackey placed in the top three in four events she competed in at the Big West Shootout this past weekend and claimed golds in the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Van Pelt, Collins accept Hula Bowl invites

Colorado State quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt and Mississippi wide receiver Chris Collins will play in the 2004 Hula Bowl on Maui, bowl officials announced yesterday.

Van Pelt was the 2002 Mountain West Conference offensive player of the year. he is averaging 242 yards passing and 72 rushing and has 22 touchdown passes this season.

Collins has 45 catches for 576 yards for the Rebels this season. Collins caught 10 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns in Mississippi's win over South Carolina on Saturday.

Islanders extend deal with Cal Lee

The Hawaiian Islanders have extended the contract of head coach Cal Lee for the 2004 arenafootball2 season, the team announced yesterday.

Lee led the Islanders to an 11-7 record and the Western Division title in his first season with the club. The Islanders also made their first appearance in the af2 playoffs.

"It feels really good to be back for a second season," said Lee, who is also an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii. "What makes it special is that we've turned a corner and now we are going to continue to make big strides."

Lee indicated that he would retain his assistant coaches including Doug Semones, Vince Passas, Darren Hernandez, Frank Pahia, John Naipo and Howard Peralta.
