"Elf": Will Ferrell stars as the sweet-natured Buddy, who was accidentally stowed away with Santa as a baby. One of Santa's elves (Bob Newhart) adopted Buddy and raised him as an elf. Now a very tall and grownup Buddy, no longer able to fit into the elf world, journeys into the realm of humans to try to find his biological family in New York, including a dad played by James Caan. Elf also befriends a department store elf (Zooey Deschanel) and saves Christmas. (PG) In related events, kids 13 and under can win passes to the film by entering Safeway stores' "Elf" coloring contest. The contest continues through Nov. 16. Also, Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall will hold an "Elf" storytime event 7:30 p.m. Friday, with desserts and prizes.
"Love Actually": Richard Curtis, who has penned such modern romantic-comedy favorites as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill," makes his directing debut with 10 overlapping story lines about -- what else -- love, set in London around Christmas. The all-star ensemble cast of Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman and Keira Knightley are featured as such characters as a woman with a serious office crush, a wife coping with a cheating husband and a U.K. prime minister who falls in love with the girl who brings him his tea.
