WHY IS IT that every time I take a few days off, I always come back to work feeling like I need another vacation to recover from the one I just took?
What a week it's been -- it all started with the finals of the Vans Triple Crown Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe last Tuesday. I finally got to meet Hawaiian Hurricane Productions' Turk Cazimero for the first time, and was thoroughly impressed by the purple pimp suit he rocked as a costume.
Taking top honors that night were Hot Rain, Neckin and Amplified, and all three bands will perform at the Vans Triple Crown of Surf Kickoff Concert scheduled for this Saturday at Sea Life Park. They'll join B.E.T., Ho'onu'a, Go Jimmy Go, Ooklah the Moc and national recording act War onstage. Tickets are $30, with pre-sales available at Sea Life Park, Hawaiian Island Creations and the UH Campus Center. Call 223-6100 for more info ...

I've got to admit it's still a little too early to tell whether I like the show, but Sanchez definitely did a good job of keeping me hooked, and watching boyfriend Junior Mika interact with her was pretty funny at times, too. But Sanchez's sister and the show's producers got more camera time than was really necessary, and what was with that rant at the very end by Ron "Ronbo" Pohnel?
If you missed last week's "Local Girl," check out channel 78 on Oceanic Cable at 9 p.m. tomorrow. Maybe this week we'll see an actual show intro, instead of just fading in to a shot of Sanchez eating licorice ...
THE FINAL highlight of my weekend had to be "Enter the Matrix" at the Wave Waikiki on Halloween. I had almost as much fun sitting outside the club watching the freaks go by as I did inside, and I even managed to get my ego checked in the process.
While cruising in the club and enjoying the performance by Missing Dave, I noticed fellow Iolani alumni Mel Azama sitting nearby and decided to say hello. But instead of showing me any love, all I got was this look like I had something growing out of my forehead -- and I wasn't even wearing a mask ...
