And they should probably
get senior discounts

PROMOTER Tim Bostock is a very young man, but is not one of those people who turn their back on their seniors. (Tom Moffatt might also qualify as seniors-friendly fresh from presenting Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard & Chuck Berry.) On Nov. 15, Bostock presents Makana at the Hawaii Theatre featuring ukulele legend Bill Tapia and steel guitar standout Tau Moe. Both are 95 years old! Kind of appropriate, following previous Bostock productions featuring Martin Denny, who's also in his 90s, and Young@Heart, a rocking vocal group with the average age of 77 ... Don Ho, also in his 70s, flew to the Manele Bay Hotel one night last week to do a 15-minute set for the president of the Discovery Channel and a group of 50 execs celebrating their last night at the resort and then singing along with the "Tiny Bubbles" man. Long way to go for a 15-minute gig, but Ho had no complaints ... And last week Auntie Genoa Keawe celebrated her 85th at the Waikiki Marriott where she performs -- for longer than 15 minutes. She's held notes that long, hasn't she? ...

A LOT of people probably missed her Sunday in "Malcolm in the Middle" because they were watching the parade of stars at CBS's 75th anniversary celebration, but Honolulu's Sarah Kobayashi, a UH dance alumnus, was on the show's first show of the season. She and choreographer Fred Tallaksen worked with the actors for the dance numbers in the season premiere ...

Sir Sting

STOPPING by the Lewers Lounge to catch the restful music of Jim Howard and Bruce Hamada Jr. the other night, we were treated to the addition of Osaka guitarist/composer Hiroshi Hata. I asked if he ever listened to FM802 in Osaka. He seemed surprised but said yes. I then asked if he'd heard former isle DJ Kamasami Kong on that station and he allowed that indeed he had. So it was one of those coincidences of timing that I returned home to find an email from Kong (aka Bob Zix) telling me about the rather intimidating interview he did on his show last week with Sting, aka Sir Gordon Sumner. Sting is a fervent tree-hugger, and when Kong asked how he and his listeners could help save the rain forests, quickly shot back, "Stop using wooden, disposable chopsticks." ...

SPEAKING of rain forests, beginning Friday a number of elevators in 10 Honolulu office towers will be showing off "Stop into the Hawaiian Forest," a photo exhibit of some of Hawaii's rare, remote native forests and an authentic forest soundtrack. Should cut down on the whistlers ...

Reign in Spain

AUTHENTIC Spanish dancers and musicians from La Tania will perform Nov. 13 at the community Spanish dinner sponsored by the Lanai Filipino Club at a dinner and show presented in collaboration of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Castle & Cooke's Lanai Visiting Artists program. The group will also visit Lanai Elementary School and do educational workshops for kids in grades 3 to 6 who are studying Spanish in the classroom ... Also on Nov. 13 is the opening of "Man of La Mancha" at Army Community Theater with Mary Chestnut in the starring role ...
