Warrior D adjusted
to beat Spartans
San Jose State piled up
rushing yards early, before
Hawaii clamped down
SAN JOSE, Calif. >> Early in Hawaii's football game at San Jose State on Saturday, it looked like the Spartans would roll with the running game the way Louisiana Tech and Texas-El Paso did the previous two weeks.
UH won those games, but it's never good when you can't stop the run.
But after a first quarter in which the Warriors allowed 45 yards on 11 carries by Damarcus Ingram, Hawaii adjusted and ended up winning 13-10. Hawaii yielded only 103 yards on the ground, a season-low.
"We were playing a read defense," defensive line coach Vantz Singletary said. "We were conscious of their screen because they're a big screen team. So after that first quarter, (head coach) June (Jones) said, 'Hey let's get after them.' We attacked them from then on."
It worked until San Jose State's final drive, when the Spartans unleashed their other running back, Lance Martin. Martin added life to SJSU's offense, with all 43 of his yards coming on seven carries in the final drive.
But the Warriors stopped the Spartans within inches of their goal line on a 4-yard screen pass from Scott Rislov to Courtney Anderson. Rislov tried to spike the ball with one second left to stop the clock, but officials ruled the game over.
Referee Gene Semko released a statement addressing the confusion at the end of the game.
"The quarterback tried to run, was stopped, then took a step and spiked the ball," Semko said.
Defensive end Travis LaBoy wasn't directly involved in the screen pass the play before when David Gilmore and Keani Alapa teamed up to stop Anderson. But he said it was a fitting end to a game where UH's defense performed well together.
"Everybody. Linebackers, corners, safeties rallied to make a play and not let him in," LaBoy said.
Defensive tackle Lui Fuga used a cliche, but it was apt.
"That's football. A game of inches, dog," said Fuga, who had one of UH's four sacks. "Now we got a bye to fix up our bodies, and then we've got Nevada. We'll be ready."
Up for awards: UH nominated junior receiver Chad Owens, LaBoy and freshman punter Kurt Milne for WAC offensive, defensive and special teams player of the week awards.
Owens caught nine passes for 149 yards, including a key career-high 62-yard run-and-catch on what turned out to be the game-winning drive.
LaBoy was in on seven tackles, including two sacks among three tackles for loss that accounted for 22 yards.
Milne averaged only 38.6 yards on five punts, but three of them ended with the Spartans starting from behind their 20-yard line.
Thankful: UH quarterback Tim Chang always credits his offensive line, the defense, the coaches, the ushers ...
This time, when he expressed gratitude to the defense, it really meant something, since he was off-target. Chang completed 28 of 46 passes for 332 yards and a touchdown. But he also threw two interceptions, and many of his misfires were nowhere near his receivers' hands.
"We struggled on offense and (the UH defense) did a great job. Defense does win championships and we're one step closer to our goal. My hat's really off to them and I'm very thankful to have a group like that," Chang said. "Those turnovers were crucial, but once again the defense stayed strong. Knowing they have the offense's back at all times helps."
Short yardage: Jones stayed in California for a day to visit his agent and friend, Leigh Steinberg. ... As of yesterday, UH had not set its practice schedule for this week. Usually after a win, Jones gives the players an extra day off during a bye week.
