[ TURNING POINT ]
Warriors gang up in time of need
In the old days before the run-and-shoot, Hawaii used to be known for gang-tackling. Yesterday, the Warriors made the biggest defensive play of the season so far in team fashion.
San Jose State trailed 13-10 with 20 seconds left in the game, but the Spartans had the ball at the Hawaii 4. After their final timeout, quarterback Scott Rislov threw a screen pass to tight end Courtney Anderson.
Cornerback Abraham Elimimian turned the play inside. Linebacker Ikaika Curnan closed the middle. Linebacker Keani Alapa and safety David Gilmore made the tackle.
"I just saw the tight end and I knew I had to hit him low because he's a big dude," Gilmore said. "So I tried to hit him as far in front of the goal line as possible. Tried to attack him so he doesn't fall over the goal line."
Anderson stretched his arm with the football toward the end zone, but he missed breaking the plane of the goal line by a half-foot.
A second appeared to be left on the clock when Rislov spiked the ball, but the Spartans were not set and the officials ruled the game over.

Hawaii gets extra time to prepare for Nevada
Hawaii gets its second and final bye of the season this week.
The Warriors won't rest too much, since they have a tough road game at Nevada on Nov. 15.
The last time UH went to Reno, the Warriors had 14 days before the previous game -- but the situation was much different, as Hawaii had to fly to Nevada a week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks for a game Sept. 22, 2001. The Wolf Pack won 28-20.
Including that loss, the Warriors' record is 4-3 in games after bye weeks in coach June Jones' five seasons.
