Freshmen runners lead Hawaii to eighth in WAC
Freshman Dana Buchanon finished 22nd at the Western Athletic Conference cross country championships at Belmont, Calif., yesterday, but the Rainbow Wahine could do no better than eighth.
Buchanon, a Canadian Junior National champion in the 800 meters, ran the hilly 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Fellow Canadian freshman Chantelle Laan was the next Rainbow Wahine in, coming in 31st with a time of 19:04.
Also scoring for UH were senior Robin McRobbie (39th), Monica Su (41st) and Heidi Frank (53rd).
Jenny Bell was just four seconds behind Frank at 20:13.
Abigail McAllister helped Nevada win the team title as the top finisher with a time of 17:07.
The Rainbow Wahine have two weeks to prepare for the Western Regional at Portland, Ore.
Hawaii falls from swimming's list of unbeatens
IRVINE, Calif. >> The Hawaii women's swimming and diving team lost its first dual meet of the season while the UH men went 3-1 in dual meets yesterday on the final day of the Big West Shootout.
The Rainbow Wahine went 3-1 yesterday, beating UC Santa Barbara, 73-38; UC Irvine 81-32, and Cal Poly 92-19. UH lost to Washington 59-53.
The Wahine won three events, including the 400-medley relay. Ying-Juan Zhen won the 50 free and diver Christine Menard the 1-meter event. UH finished 7-1 at the two-day event, held at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
In the men's competition, the Warriors defeated UC Irvine, 73-40; UC Santa Barbara 77-34; and Cal Poly 100-11. They fell to Washington 61-50.
UH swimmers took first in four events yesterday. Peter Thew won the 200 free, Cheyne Bloch the 200 IM, Andrew Affleck the 1,000 free and Kurt Boehm the 200 fly.
The Warriors finished 6-2 over the two days.
The Wahine host Pacific in a dual meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Center. The Warriors host Cal at 6 p.m. Friday, also at the DKAC.
Bown leads U.S. to win in World Cup
TOKYO >> Former Hawaii volleyball player Heather Bown knocked down 16 kills and added three blocks and an ace as the U.S. volleyball team defeated South Korea in the opening match of the Women's World Cup, a 12-nation tournament that serves as a qualifier for next year's Athens Olympics.
Danielle Scott scored 22 points on attack and five on blocks to lead the Americans to a 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13 victory.
"As always, games against South Korea aren't easy," U.S. coach Toshiaki Yoshida said. "We didn't have much time to prepare for this match and that made it all the harder."
