IT MAKES YOUR HEAD SPIN
CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / CRUSSELL@STARBULLETIN.COM
Paula Adams held on to a spinning bicycle wheel while standing on top of a turntable during the Physics and Astronomy Open House held at the University of Hawaii yesterday. As Adams tilted the wheel with her hands, the turntable would move in the opposite direction. The mechanical exercise demonstrated the principle of the conservation of angular momentum, which allows for such things as bicycle riding and ice skate pirouetting, as well as the existence of tornadoes and black holes. The UH Physics Department holds the open house annually and welcomes the attendance of educational groups.

CHRISTMAS CHEER GOES TO THE DOGS
CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / CRUSSELL@STARBULLETIN.COM
Getting a Christmas card shot with Santa Paws became a full crew activity yesterday at the Hawaiian Humane Society. Pet owners Leolani and James Malterre stayed on the sidelines as their dog, Makana, sniffed Santa Paws. Also on Santa Paws' lap was Alyssa Malterre's miniature wired dachshund, Kekuokoa, which posed amicably for photographer Alex Viarnes. Other pet owners who wish to get a photograph with Santa Paws can do so by visiting the Hawaiian Humane Society on Friday or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes the negatives or photo CD.
