A shootout between police and a man armed with a sawed-off shotgun ended when police shot and killed the gunman on Old Government Road in Waianae yesterday afternoon, police and witnesses said.

One police officer suffered minor injuries on his arm from flying glass when the window on his SUV was shot out, police said. The officer was taken to Waianae Comprehensive Health Center and treated for lacerations. Another officer was also treated for minor injuries, said Deputy Chief Paul Putzulu.

The shooting occurred at about 5:15 p.m. behind the 7-Eleven near the intersection of Old Government Road and Farrington Highway. Police were investigating the shooting late into the night.

Putzulu said the suspect was seen driving a stolen green Dodge Neon earlier yesterday and was involved in a couple of accidents along Farrington Highway.

The pursuit was called off, but police learned the man had gotten into a silver van and caught up with the man on Old Government Road.

When officers pulled over the van, Putzulu said the man moved into the driver's seat and fired at police who returned fire and killed the suspect. A woman and a juvenile girl were in the van at the time of the shooting, but were not injured, Putzulu said.

Police would not give out the identity of the man who was shot. Detectives said a press conference would be held sometime today.

Witnesses said the man was driving the Neon erratically at speeds up to 80 mph on Farrington Highway.

The aunt of a woman whom police say was driving the van said her 25-year-old niece had parked the van at Waianae Market to go shopping, when the gunman, who the aunt said was a cousin of her niece's boyfriend, forced her back into the van.

Kelvin Seda, of Waianae, said the man showed him a sawed off shotgun at the Waianae Boat Harbor three days prior to the incident. He said the man asked him for help after he said he locked himself out of the Neon. Seda said he loaned the man a screwdriver to jimmy the lock.

Seda said he called police and told them about the shotgun after seeing the Neon driving erratically on the highway yesterday afternoon.
