Day of workshops offers lessons in space science

Sixth through 12th grade students, teachers, parents and guardians are invited to the second annual Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at Punahou School's Science Center complex.

Seventeen hands-on science workshops will be presented on NASA and other subjects. Students also can create 3-D art, make a water-powered bottle rocket, create slime and other chemicals, simulate microgravity, learn how to be a space station detective, build a robot and explore how volcanoes are plumbed.

The event is free but registration is required to attend the workshops. It can be done through www.higp.hawaii.edu/spacegrant.

The public can attend interactive displays without registration.

Workshops include "Lights, Camera, Cells?" featuring Hawaiian Electric Co. engineers, "Voyaging Canoe and Solar Sail Design using Magnetic Levitation Vehicles," "Dr. Gadget and Things That Fly," and "Cat-A-Pult Physics," where kids can make catapults and other objects out of common household items.

The Hawaii Space Grant Consortium is organizing the event under leadership of science educator and retired teacher Art Kimura. Hawaiian Electric Co. and Punahou are major co-sponsors.

Charles Lacy Veach, who died of cancer in 1995, graduated from Punahou School and the Air Force Academy and crewed on the Space Shuttle Columbia when it made contact with the Hokule'a voyaging canoe on its way to Hawaii from Rarotonga in 1992.
