WHAT A VIEW: Weather vanes grace a site on Waikii Ranch where residents like to sit and look out at the distance. The view? More pasture land, and trees.

Solitude
LONGTIME photographer Steven Lum took a short vacation to the Big Island, where he visited friends who live on a farm near Waimea. At such sites as Waikii Ranch, Palolu Valley and Parker Ranch, Lum captured the breathtaking sights of nature and its almost lonely isolation.
"It was totally opposite from Honolulu," Lum says. "No one's around, and you see nothing but open land all the way down to the ocean. It was a kinda lonely feeling, but defintely a time to relax, reflect and go inward."
SUNDOWN: Down the hill from the vanes, sunset sets the land afire with color.

IN POLOLU VALLEY, AN INTERESTING SITE: Wild donkeys graze against the backdrop of ocean.

LIFE ON PARKER RANCH: A colt lovingly nudges its mother.
UNTROD ROAD: A road on Waikii Ranch bears the dark color of unused asphalt. Indeed, the road rarely sees traffic of any kind.
SOLITARY ROCK: A lone rock rests on an undeveloped hillside at Waikii Ranch.
