Warriors advance to championship meet

IRVINE, Calif. >> The University of Hawaii men's swimming and diving team won two of three matches on day one of the Big West Shootout to advance to today's championship meet at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Warriors defeated Denver 132-24 and Cal Poly 151-16 before losing to Washington 94-59.

Distance specialist Andrew Affleck had the best day individually, capturing the top spot in the 1,650 free, 500 free, and 400 IM His finishing time of 15:25.05. in the 1,650 free earned him his first NCAA provisional qualifying standard of the season.

Today the Warriors face UC Santa Barbara, host UC Irvine, and Washington.

Wahine earn sweep: The Rainbow Wahine swimming and diving team swept three opponents on the first day of the Big West Shootout to advance to today's championship meet round.

Hawaii defeated Cal Poly 114-15, BYU 101-27 and Pacific 11-0 yesterday in Irvine, Calif. Pacific did not show up to the shootout and forfeited the competition.

Swimmers Nicole Mackey and Yan Chen both turned in NCAA provisional qualifying times. Mackey earned those marks with first-place finishes in the 100 back (55.95) and 200 back (1:59.97). Chen's time of 4:18.72 in the 400 IM earned her a provisional mark.

Dougherty joins Hawaiian Islanders

The Hawaiian Islanders have hired Kelley Dougherty as a sales executive.

Her responsibilities include selling corporate sponsorships, season tickets, individual and group packages and memberships to the Islanders' Business Club for the 2004 season.

Dougherty graduated with a bachelor's degree in media studies from the University of Virginia. She also attended UC Santa Barbara and was a member of the women's varsity rowing team at both schools.

Sony Open fund-raiser begins this month

The "Take a Swing at Crime in the Sony Open" program begins this month and runs through December at a number of local golf courses.

Each $10 donor receives a complimentary daily admission ticket to the Sony Open in Hawaii, Jan. 12-18.Participants who land the ball in a specific area also will qualify as finalists in the Sony Open Million Dollar tournament at the Waialae Country Club on Jan. 18.

Donations from the event benefit the Crimestoppers Honolulu organization.

Contestants can participate starting at 8 a.m. The initial schedule includes the Koolau Golf Club and Navy-Marine Golf Course today, Pearl Country Club, Hawaii Kai and Luana Hills Country Club next Saturday and Turtle Bay and Ko Olina at 8 a.m. and Coral Creek at 7 a.m. on Nov. 15.

Sony Open seeking volunteers: Sony Open in Hawaii organizers are looking for volunteers to help operate the tournament's Tourcast service at next year's event.

The service allows fans to follow the shots of every player during the tournament. Volunteer responsibilities may include player identification or operating laser equipment to document the placement of the ball on the course.

Soccer league reservation deadline tomorrow

The team entry deadline for the Winter Indoor Soccer League is tomorrow. The league runs from Jan. 3 to March 14 and is open to boys and girls teams, U8 to U19. The entry fee is $250.

Kraft Shop and Score program begins

Kraft Foods Hawaii and the Hawaii Sports Network have partnered with Times Super Markets to conduct the third annual Kraft Shop and Score program from now through Dec. 2.

Through the program, parents, students, alumni and other community members can purchase Kraft products at Times Super Markets on Oahu with their Royal Card to accumulate points for the participating school of their choice. Each school will receive a share of a $50,000 credit to buy Adams, Adidas and Wilson Sporting Goods uniforms and equipment based on its number of points. The more products purchased on a school's behalf, the larger its share of the credit.

There are 38 Oahu schools participating in the program.

Swimmers invited to enter meet

Swimmers ages 19 and older are invited to enter the Oahu Club's annual Honolulu Masters Swimming Championships on Nov. 14-16.

Swimmers from Canada, Japan and the mainland will join local swimmers in the meet, which will consist of individual and relay events in the breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle. There are no qualifying standards for the meet.

The entry deadline is Nov. 10. For more information, call the Oahu Club at 395-3300.

Hawaii Senior Olympics begins Nov. 15

The sixth annual Hawaii Senior Olympics will begin on Nov. 15, with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

The games are open to any man or woman worldwide who is at least 50 years old by December 31, 2003. Competitions will be held in 11 different sports.
