Club hit with $500 fine for bias against males
The Honolulu Liquor Commission fined the Blue Tropix Restaurant and Nightclub $500 yesterday for discriminating against men.
More specifically, it was for offering a "ladies' night" in which women were admitted free and the men paid.
An official of the nightclub failed to appear at the commission's hearing on the complaint late this afternoon, telling the commission staff he had to go to the doctor. The commission voted to approve a default judgment against the club and approving the fine.
The citation is based on a commission rule that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in any goods, privileges or services provided by a liquor license holder.

Voluntary conservation measures that began Aug. 3 have been extended to November. Users are asked to water landscapes before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. only on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays unless granted an exemption.

Police say suspect takes swing and a dip
Police in Wahiawa arrested a 31-year-old man yesterday who they said tried to escape by taking a dip in Lake Wilson.
Police said an anonymous tip about alleged drug activity led officers to Kukui Street and California Avenue at 10:55 a.m. Upon arrival, police ran a check on the man and found a warrant for his arrest.
Police said that as the officer was handcuffing the suspect, the man swung his fist backward and struck the officer's nose, then ran and hid. A short time later, police said the man attempted to swim away via Lake Wilson but gave up and went back to shore, where officers were waiting.
Police arrested the man for assaulting a police officer and for the outstanding warrant. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
