Rainbow Wahine off to WAC championship

The Hawaii cross country team will try to improve on last year's seventh-place showing when the Rainbow Wahine compete in the Western Athletic Conference championship Saturday in Belmont, Calif.

The WAC meet will be held at the Crystal Springs International Cross Country Course and is hosted by San Jose State. Rice is the defending women's team champion.

Hawaii's Victoria Chang placed third in the 5,000-meter women's race at last year's WAC championship. This year's squad has been led by Canadian freshmen Dana Buchanan and Chantelle Laan. Buchanan was UH's top finisher in the team's last three events.

After the WAC meet, the team will prepare for the NCAA West Regional set for Nov. 15 in Portland, Ore. The NCAA Championships are Nov. 24 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Seasiders drop in water polo poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team fell to 15th in the men's national collegiate top 20 poll released yesterday.

Southern California (14-3) continues to hold the top spot. BYUH (11-6) was tied for 14th last week and hosts Chaminade tonight at 7.

Dragster Challenge heats up Garden Isle

The Garden Island Racing Association's 2003 season concludes Saturday with the National Hot Rod Association's National Dragster Challenge at Kauai Raceway Park.

Time trials start at 1 p.m., elimination rounds start at 6 p.m.

HSJGA to sponsor workshop

The Hawaii State Jr. Golf Association will sponsor a workshop conducted by broadcaster/sports analyst Chris McLachlin and a panel of NCAA Division I coaches, athletes and parents for prospective college student-athletes Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon in room 241 at the University of Hawaii athletic complex.

The panel will present information and answer questions regarding admission, recruitment, scholarships and financial aid, rules and eligibility, how to get noticed and college life.

The workshop is free for HSJGA members and $5 for nonmembers. For more information call 532-0559 or go to www.hsjga.org.
