McGarry shoots out to lead in OCC seniors
Russ McGarry was the only player to break par in the first round of the Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational yesterday to lead Mervin Matsumoto by three stokes.
McGarry had four birdies and two bogeys in his round of 69. Bruce Smith is tied with Matsumoto, the defending champion, for second with the final round beginning today at 7 a.m.
Wendell Kop leads the super senior division by six strokes over Jim Swoish. Kop won the event last year and shot a 71 yesterday. The super seniors tee off at 8:28 this morning.
Pilgreen best in PacWest last week
Hawaii-Hilo outside hitter Sara Pilgreen earned the Pacific West Conference's Player of the Week award for the first time this season yesterday.
Pilgreen drilled seven service aces in an upset of Hawaii Pacific Saturday and leads the conference in kills with 4.69 per game and is third in digs with 3.63.
Rainbow Wahine outfield wins award
Hawaii's entire starting outfield was named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American scholar athletes yesterday.
Joining that group -- Tracy Uchima, Justina Kahaku and Marie Jackson -- were infielders Stacey Ritter and Noelle Izumi. The Rainbow Wahine ended last season with a 3.21 cumulative team grade point average, which placed them 35th in the nation.
Hawaii Sprint Car Series to host U.S. Auto Club
The United States Auto Club Sprint Car Racing Series will face off against the Hawaii Sprint Car Series Nov. 14 and 15 at the Hawaii Motor Speedway, with qualifying races starting at 5 p.m. each night.
An open practice is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Speedway, located at Campbell Industrial Park.
Admission is $7 for children and $15 for ages 11 and up. Two-night passes are available. For more information contact Jerry Apana, 630-0363.
