IRS owes Hawaii
taxpayers $626,300
The Internal Revenue Service owes 1,028 Hawaii taxpayers a total of $626,300. The money, which amounts to an average of $586 per check, comes from income tax refunds or advance child tax credit checks that were returned to the agency as undeliverable.
Taxpayers owed money will need to update their address with the IRS before a check can be reissued.
To get the advance child tax credit check, taxpayers must update their addresses before Dec 5. If a taxpayer misses the cutoff date, they also may claim the credit when they complete their 2003 return, the IRS said.
The IRS web site at www.irs.gov lets taxpayers track both refunds and the advance child tax credit. The "Where's my refund? and Where's my advance tax credit? section of the IRS homepage provides further information. For information on a tax refund, taxpayers enter information on the Web site including their Social Security number and their filing status such as single, or married and filing jointly. In addition, the refund amount shown on their 2002 tax return is required.
For information on the advance child tax credit, taxpayers also must enter the number of exemptions shown on their 2002 tax return. When the information is submitted online, taxpayers see Web pages that show the refund or advance child tax credit check and get further instructions if they need to resolve problems.
For taxpayers without access to the Internet, a toll-free assistance phone number at 1-800-829-1040 is available to update an address.
Taxpayers who have moved since their last filing also may change their address by filing Form 8822 with the IRS. They also can request the form by phone by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676), or download the form from the IRS Web site.
