Stubblefield resigns at Rainbow Wahine coach
Marga Stubblefield resigned as Hawaii head women's golf coach effective Dec. 31 according to an announcement yesterday by UH athletic director Herman Frazier.
Stubblefield, in her sixth season as Rainbow Wahine head coach, has decided to concentrate on teaching.
"I've enjoyed my time here, especially working with Herman Frazier for the past year or so," Stubblefield said. "But, it's time for me to move on and go back to the one thing I truly enjoy most doing that makes me happy, and that's teaching."
"I am extremely saddened by Marga's decision to leave us," Frazier said. "We had a very good relationship. I helped her in her recruiting efforts and we often sat down and talked story about golf. I understand her decision and wish her well in her journey."
Slater passes Kauai's Irons with win
MUNDAKA, Basque Country >> Six-time world champion Kelly Slater of Florida won the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday, overtaking Kauai's Andy Irons, the reigning world champion, in the year's points standings.
Slater defeated Australia's Mick Fanning in the semifinals to take the points lead, then outperformed Taj Burrow of Australia in the final for his 26th career World Championship Tournament title and the $30,000 first prize.
With three events left, Slater has taken a 180-point lead over Irons as they head to Brazil for the next contest, beginning Monday. The entire championship could very well come down to the Pipeline Masters, the last event of the WCT, Dec. 8-20 at the Banzai Pipeline.
Men's hoops season tickets on sale Monday
Season tickets for UHmen's basketball go on sale Monday.
Tickets will be available at the Stan Sheriff Box Office, by phone at 944-BOWS, or over the Internet at www.etickethawaii.com.
Only upper-level tickets remain. Prices are $185 for adults, $79 for students ages 4-18 and $49 for UH students.
The season begins November 21 against UC Santa Barbara and includes games against 11 teams that participated in postseason play last year.
Tennis Wahine fall in main draw
Both remaining University of Hawaii singles and doubles teams in the main draw of the ITA Western Regional were defeated yesterday, dropping them to the consolation bracket.
Junior Lauren Fitzgerald lost to USC's Bernadette Bayani 6-0, 6-4, while Sylvia Jaros took Arizona's Iza Ferreira to three sets before losing 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. In doubles action, Fitzgerald and fellow junior Paige Mainor lost to San Diego State's Katalina Romero and Indra Erichsen 8-3, while Jaros and sophomore Kana Aikawa lost to Shilpa Joshi and Anya Loncaric of UCLA 8-2.
UH-Hilo men's golf team in 10th
The University of Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team sits in 10th place after the first day of the Nelson Invitational at Stanford University.
The Vulcans were led by Nick Mason and Garrett Okamura, who are tied for 25th place at even-par 71. Colin Gilliam finished a stroke behind with a 72, while Tysen Shinaut shot 74 and Joseph Saliba 77.
Duke leads the team standings with a 278, followed by Washington, Kansas and Colorado at 279. The Vulcans finished with a 288.
Matsui wins Pan American title
Chani Matsui of Honolulu lifted a total of 264 pounds to win her class for the United States at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in Puerto Rico on Thursday.
The 15-year-old, 105-pounder snatched 115 pounds and jerked 149 pounds at the international event. Her coach is Mel Miyamoto of Honolulu.
Ala Moana Beach Park hosts tennis event
The 17th annual Tennis Weekend is being held today and tomorrow at the Ala Moana Beach Park Tennis Facility/McCoy Pavilion. The two-day event is free and open to the public.
There will be instructional clinics and workshops by various tennis professionals.
Hawaii Pacific assistant tennis coach Stefan Pampulov will host a demonstration clinic tomorrow from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
